Job Hunting in Ireland Print E-mail
Thursday, 16 February 2006

As mentioned in the “finding a job section”, it is easier to secure a job once you have already relocated to Ireland. This is true for all types of positions since recruiters are more likely to hire local applicants.

The following guide will be based on the assumption that you have some sort of skills and experience or relevant degree/certificate in the profession in which you are looking to find a job. It is nearly impossible to find a job without any skills. Speaking Basic English is also highly recommended. I know of many people who came to Ireland with no skills at all and ended up running out of money and sleeping on the streets. So before you move, make sure that you know what type of job you are looking for and be sure that you have the relevant skills.

Finding a job in Ireland is relatively easy. The economy is booming with thousands of jobs created each year, and there is still a huge need for young flexible workforce employees. There are specific areas where majority of the workers are foreign. Some examples are construction, hotel, and restaurant staff, and so on.

The easiest way to find a job is to walk into recruitment agencies with your CV and see how many available positions you qualify for. Remember some agencies specialize in specific types of staff, like hotel staff or IT staff, etc. The recruiter will help you find out what positions are a good match for your skills and will refer you to another recruitment agency if they are not able to assist you in your quest.

It is also useful to walk into an internet café and register your CV online on several job sites so the recruiters can look for you if they have a matching position. You can also apply for jobs online. Apply for all jobs you can find that match your skills since it is always easier to make a choice from 2-3 serious than to accept the only offer on the table. Even worse, is having no offer at all because you are waiting for days on a recruiter to get back to you regarding to a position. Remember your target is to get a job as soon as possible and stop spending your savings.

When you walk the streets, keep your eyes open because there are local businesses looking for staff. These businesses usually advertise by posting a sign on the premises. Scan the streets for available jobs. For example, if you want to work in a bar, restaurant, or café you might get lucky and see a sign posted outside a company.

You can also buy local newspapers like Irish times or Irish Independent. You can also just pick up a free copy of A.M. Herald that has a classifieds section with jobs. Still, the most comprehensive list of jobs is published on the internet.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is when you are looking for a job to have a good CV. Long, detailed CV’s are not in fashion anymore. Try to highlight the experience that required by the particular position you are applying for. The CV should be experience and facts based so the recruiter can easily skim it. If your CV looks too complicated or not easy to follow, there is a good chance that the recruiter will opt to interview another candidate instead. Do not forget that a recruiter looks at a CV for 3 minutes on average.

The first calls regarding to the position you have applied for you will receive from the recruitment consultant. This is NOT the company where you are going to be working but the person who selects the CVs and puts them forward to the client. The client is the company where you will be placed. The reason for this is that most of the companies are using recruitment agencies to fill their vacancies. If it is a contract position, you have to negotiate your wage with the recruitment consultant.

Once you have passed this stage, your CV has been forwarded to the client. The client will select which applicants he/she wants to interview. This usually takes a couple of days, so do not lose hope if a little time lapses. If you have been selected for an interview, the recruitment consultant will give you a call or send an email. Be prepared to interview via the phone, which is more complicated than a face-to-face interview.

Once you have passed the interview with the client, you will be faced with the frustration of waiting again, this time to get feedback that you will receive from the recruitment consultant. The bad news is that some recruiters will not get back to you if you have not been selected for the position. For this reason, it is recommended that you give them a call yourself for a status update.

If you get the job, make sure to have them send you the contact immediately so you can sign it and fax it back promptly, ensuring that you have the job.

If you do not receive the news you have been hoping for and find out that another candidate was hired for the position, do not lose hope. There are numerous jobs to be claimed. If you have been interviewed once, then it is likely that you are a desirable candidate who will be interviewed again by other companies. It is only a matter of time.
