Housing in Ireland Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 February 2006

Fuelled by economic growth, the housing market is flourishing. For this reason, renting or buying property is a costly endeavor. The average rent prices for Dublin start at around €300 for a room, and around €700 for an apartment.

Please note that roomshare is a pretty common thing in Ireland. This means that  2-3 people share the same room. This is the cheapest ever option you can find a shared room from €150-200 however you can forget having privacy. If you come to ireland solely to save money this might be the best option to go for.

When one considers renting, it is important to calculate with 1-month security deposit, which should be paid in advance together with the 1st month rent. Therefore, you need to have a minimum of €700-800 to start up.

Renting an apartment should not be an impulsive endeavor. Check out the apartments carefully because many are in poor condition. This could mean problems with appliances or other hassles. New apartments are available for those who are financially able, and several housing projects in Ireland provide quality apartments for more meager incomes. These apartments are usually bought by investment purposes by the owner so it is all for rent.

Renting an apartment is not always as easy as signing on the dotted line. Many companies require references. Collecting these references before you meet with an apartment manager will save you time and headaches. The most common references are bank references, rental references, and employment references

- Bank references can be obtained from your bank. They usually have forms that can be filled out, verifying your history with the branch.

- Apartment owners need to assure themselves that your monthly income can support your rent. A reference from your current employer can provide them with your salary as well as the length of your contract.

- A reference letter from a previous property owner will work in your favor to confirm that you have paid your rent consistently and in a timely manner.

If technology is a central force in your life and you can often be found surfing the net, make sure to inquire in advance whether or not broadband internet service is available. Unfortunately, this type of internet coverage is still very limited in Ireland.
